As many like to say, the best things in life are free. But you know what, the worst things in life are free too. So what if love is free, and family? What about cancer, communicable diseases, and Jehovah’s bibles? Those things are free as well, but I’ve never heard anyone celebrate it. Let’s take a closer look at good free vs. bad free:
GOOD FREE: The warmth of the sun, the love of a family, the love of a spouse (it’s not love if it costs money), water (though not filtered), air to breath, your blood, healing, platelets, an immune system, yawning, laughing, the ability to see, hear, smell and taste.
BAD FREE: Natural disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes, all forms of cancer, HIV, boogers, excess mucus, colds, the flu, familial relation to those that bother you, stomach aches, jury duty, just about everything from the Minnesota State Fair, basic cable, macaroni necklaces from 3-year olds, solicitation from telemarketers, Jehovah’s bibles, Hare Krishna pamphlets, junk mail, unpredictable weather that can produce hail and wind damage, ignorance, ear wax, menstruation, aging, hair loss and couches or any furniture labeled as free on the side of a road.
Is it fair to say that both the best and worst things in life are free? Or do the best things in life actually cost money? That’s very debatable. Not everyone has the same conception of best. Perhaps for one man material items are the best and for another it is the mere fact of being alive.
Unfortunately, many of the things we receive for free are finite. Our bodies, our strength, our senses…they all fade and deteriorate as life marches forward. That said, through advancements in both technology and medical research, people can now spend money to sustain life and mobility. Perhaps it is that the best things in life are free, but may need a tune-up, and thus end up costing a bit. I am certain however that many of life’s worst things are free, as laid out above. I mean, come on, who’d ever pay for a macaroni necklace made by a 3-year old?
